Learn something new every day...

I had not heard of this before, so it has my attention!

The lead article on Spaceweather.com this morning (January 20) says that:
"High-latitude auroras are possible on January 21 when Earth crosses through a fold in the heliospheric current sheet. This is called a "solar sector boundary crossing."
Evidently this happens from time to time (although I could not find an article telling me how often it occurs). I did find a long NASA article that describes the current sheet as "a sprawling surface where the polarity of the Sun's magnetic field changes from plus (north) to minus (south)." The article goes on to say that:
"As Earth orbits the Sun, it dips in and out of the undulating current sheet. On one side the Sun's magnetic field points north (toward the Sun), on the other side it points south (away from the Sun). South-pointing solar magnetic fields tend to cancel Earth's own magnetic field. Solar wind energy can then penetrate the local space around our planet and fuel geomagnetic storms."
My main interest in this is, of course, about the energetics. Will we feel something on that level tomorrow when the Earth "crosses through a fold" in the current sheet? Will meditation feel any different?

I'm looking forward to finding out!

  1. Wow - I just asked a friend tonight about her week last week because mine took such a radical shift on Tuesday which lasted until Sunday. And I described it almost like a chemical shift to another (negative, victimized, contracted) being who has taken up residence next to me over the last couple years. I got a phone call from my ex, and even though I had been riding a kind of high wave of newfound strength and clarity, I plunged back into a funk that didn't lift for days. My friend also reported swinging in and out of depression through last week. Do you know of any other timings or cycling related to the boundary crossing?

  2. Hi Beth -- I agree, it does feel like there were some "bumps in the road" last week, that we're still adjusting to. I haven't seen anything else about timing of more crossings through the "current sheet," but I'll let you know when I do. Take good care, Pam

  3. I find this fascinating. Please let us know when you find further info. I barely grasp what the "folds in the heliospheric current sheet" means, but I do understand & experience the energetics and polarity ideas. My first question, too, was how often this happens.

Wasn't there a recent shift in the Sun's polarity, which regularly
    occurs in 11 year cycles?

My journal for Tuesday states awakening with feelings of marked jealousy, which is new. I spent the AM trying to resolve my resistance to a long standing family situation and the rest of the week depressed and deeply weary about it. It was a turning point, I believe. Although I have tried many approaches to solving this in the past, I think some sort of healing occurred or is in process. -anita

  4. HI Anita -- Thanks for your post. As far as the polar shift on the Sun, the most recent article I could find on the NASA site was dated December 6, and is called "The Sun's Magnetic Field Is About to Flip." I'm going to start a new post and reference some of what that article talks about. Stay tuned!
